Research program 1: Sustainable manufacturing
Program overview
Driving resource-efficient and environmentally responsible manufacturing through additive technologies.
Research Program 1 focuses on improving the environmental and economic performance of manufacturing through additive manufacturing. The program explores how AM can reduce material waste, improve energy efficiency, enable recycling of feedstocks and support on-demand production across the manufacturing value chain.
By combining AM with digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0 technologies, the program helps industry partners better understand the lifecycle impacts, costs and sustainability benefits of adopting additive manufacturing. The outcome is more resource-efficient production and reduced environmental footprint while maintaining strong commercial viability.
Key focus areas
- Life cycle and sustainability assessments for AM-enabled production
- Energy and material efficiency in manufacturing processes
- Recycling and circular material strategies for AM feedstocks
- Integration of AM with Industry 4.0 technologies including data analytics, IoT and AI
